Burned Out Original Hand-Painted Multiple (HPM) on Acrylic on Laser Etched Wood Panel by Derek Hess Graffiti Street Artist Modern Pop Art. 2016 Signed & Numbered Limited Edition of 50 Burnt Wood & Acrylic on Wood Panel Artwork Size 20x10 Ready To Display "This 'Burned Out' is burned or etched into the wood, the red on the arms I laid down with a wire brush, I worked fast with the crude tools to keep the feel consistent with the rest of the piece. The first laser-etched piece done with 1xRUN, Hemorrhage, came out so nice and true to the original that another one would be cool to try. Burned Out was a no-brainer, it's burned out.. What is cool about these pieces is they are all part of an edition, all the figures are handled the same, so it is a true edition. But at the same time, each one is unique because the red is different on everyone. What I find very cool about this piece is you get a unique one of a kind signed and numbered edition print, it's the best of both worlds." - Derek Hess

Derek Hess: Confluence of Emotion and Artistry

Derek Hess has established a distinctive presence within the art world, straddling the diverse territories of pop art, street art, and graffiti. His raw, emotionally charged work captures the turmoil and passions of human experience, often revealing the tragic beauty that can exist within despair. With a career that began in the early 1990s, Hess has emerged from the Cleveland music scene, where he initially made his mark designing concert posters to become an internationally recognized artist whose work resonates on a deeply personal level with his audience.

Artistic Impact and Style

The artwork of Derek Hess is instantly recognizable for its visceral intensity and unflinching exploration of subjects like depression, anxiety, and human vulnerability. His characters, often depicted amidst struggle or in profound contemplation, showcase Hess’s profound talent for rendering human emotions palpable. His linework is disciplined and frenetic, suggesting the duality of order and chaos that defines the human condition. This tension is further articulated through his choice of mediums, often mixed media compositions, incorporating everything from traditional inks and paints to the unconventional use of bodily fluids. While deeply personal, the themes in Hess’s work tap into the universal. He examines the spectrum of human emotion with a sincerity that avoids sentimentality, instead opting for a stark realism that can be confronting. His exploration of these motifs has captivated gallery audiences and allowed for a dialogue between street culture and more traditional art consumers. This approach will enable Hess to occupy a unique niche where the rawness of street art converges with the intimacy of personal expression.

From Street to Gallery: The Journey of a Modern Artist

Hess's transitiHess'sm street art to gallery showcases is symbolic of the evolving perceptions surrounding what constitutes fine art. His work, displayed in esteemed galleries and acquired by discerning collectors, retains the edge and energy of its street origins. The emotional authenticity that underpins his creations speaks to a broad audience, bridging the often-imperceptible gap between high art and the populist roots of street culture. His contribution to the arts goes beyond the visual; Hess has been instrumental in elevating the conversation about mental health, particularly within the context of the creative community. His candidness about his struggles has lent a voice to the often-silent battle many face, and his art offers a cathartic connection for those who encounter it. Derek Hess remains a figure of significance in the art world, embodying the spirit of street pop art and graffiti art while pushing its boundaries. His raw depictions of the human experience continue to captivate, challenge, and move audiences worldwide.
