Shepard Fairey- OBEY The High Cost Of Free Speech Silkscreen Print by Shepard Fairey- OBEY

Purchase The High Cost Of Free Speech Limited Edition 2-Color Hand-Pulled Silkscreen Print on Speckled Cream Paper by Shepard Fairey graffiti street artist modern pop art. Punk rock ignited a lot of creative and philosophical things for me, and punk principles continuously remind me that speaking truth to power and questioning authority is paramount in life. The Dead Kennedys, The Clash, Black Flag, and the Circle Jerks are just a few of the groups that referenced injustices such as police brutality and abuse of power in their songs, inspiring me to speak out about the same subjects through my art. I have made a lot of lasting friendships through punk rock and its cultural offshoots. One of those friends is Sean Bonner, who began ordering my prints in the ’90s while he was art director for punk label Victory Records.

Purchase Bias by Numbers- 30X42 4-Color Hand-Pulled Limited Edition Silkscreen Print on Fine Speckletone Art Paper by Shepard Fairey Rare Street Art OBEY Pop Artwork Artist. Signed & Numbered, Bias by Numbers  30 inches by 42 inches Edition of 89 June 3, 2019  “Bias by Numbers” addresses racial bias in policing, criminal justice, and media culture. Racial bias in policing and criminal justice has a long history, including stats like – black people being five times more likely to be stopped and searched than white people, and four times more likely to be subjected to unnecessary use of force, or four times more likely to be killed by the police when unarmed. The statistics revealing racial bias in prosecution and sentencing are compelling as well. Though recreational drug use is equally common in both predominantly black communities and predominantly white communities, convictions for drug possession are almost six times higher for blacks. Blacks frequently receive longer prison sentences than whites contributing to African Americans being incarcerated at more than five times the rate of whites.

Shepard Fairey- OBEY Icarus Democracy Silkscreen Print by Shepard Fairey- OBEY

Purchase Icarus Democracy 3-Color Hand-Pulled Limited Edition Silkscreen Print on Cream Speckle Tone Paper by Shepard Fairey Rare Street Art OBEY Pop Artwork Artist. 2022 Signed & Numbered Limited Edition of 500 Artwork Size 24x36 "Liberty and equality are principles most people value, but the challenge is to find the proper equilibrium between the two. Democracy is the mechanism our nation has used to balance the freedom and desires of the individual with policies that are fair and beneficial for the collective of society. Democracy requires dedicated maintenance. With the culture of the previous administration and many politicians undermining democracy itself, the folly of over-confidence about the guaranteed endurance of democracy will lead to potential disaster. The threat of fascism is very real. If you value democracy use your voice and your vote. I’d recommend reading Timothy Snyders “On Tyranny” to anyone who does not see the threats to democracy (and the principles it protects) as concerning. This print, “Icarus Democracy,” will also be available in person at Dallas Contemporary." -Shepard Fairey The Icarus Democracy Silkscreen Print is a piece of art created by Shepard Fairey, an American contemporary street artist, graphic designer, and activist. In the Icarus Democracy Silkscreen Print, Fairey uses the myth of Icarus to convey a message about democracy. In Greek mythology, Icarus is a figure who, along with his father Daedalus, escapes imprisonment using wings fashioned from feathers and wax. Despite being warned by his father, Icarus flies too close to the sun, causing the wax in his wings to melt and sending him plummeting into the sea. The story of Icarus is often interpreted as a cautionary tale about hubris and the perils of overconfidence or overreaching. Fairey's print likely uses the Icarus story to comment on the state of democracy, suggesting that democracies can also fall victim to hubris and overconfidence, resulting in negative consequences. Or maybe it's just fearmongering? The piece serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance in preserving and protecting democratic values and institutions both ironically and literally. The artwork, like many of Fairey's pieces, is created using the silkscreen printing technique. This process involves using a screen to apply ink onto a surface, creating bold, vibrant images. The Icarus Democracy Silkscreen Print showcases Fairey's signature style, characterized by strong lines, bold colors, and iconic imagery, featuring portraiture & symbols that can be easily recognized and interpreted by a wide audience.

Signed by Shepard Fairey.  Numbered edition of 100. Jim Marshall's photograph of a coal mining family in Hazard, Kentucky, taken while he lived with them, says a lot with what it shows, which is a mother and two children huddled together in support of each other, but it says just as much with what it lacks. There is a conspicuous absence of material necessities and a father. I don't know whether the father was working in a coal mine when the photograph was taken or had potentially died young because of the health risks of working under dangerous conditions, but it is clear that the family is struggling and lacking.

Shepard Fairey- OBEY Moon Over Biloxi- White Silkscreen Print by Shepard Fairey- OBEY

Purchase Moon Over Biloxi- White 1-Color Hand-Pulled Limited Edition Silkscreen Print on Fine Art Paper by Shepard Fairey Rare Street Art Famous Pop Artwork Artist. White Variant Signed & Numbered Moon Over Biloxi  Screen Print 18 x 24 inches Edition of 200 July 27, 2010. "The title of this print “Moon Over Biloxi” is a tribute to the  Dead Kennedy’s song “Moon Over Marin”. In 1984 I picked up maybe my 4th punk record which was the 2nd Dead Kennedy’s album “Plastic Surgery Disasters”. The album is a great listen all the way through and includes some blistering tunes like “Riot” and “Bleed For Me” laced with social commentary. The surprise song though is “Moon Over Marin”… detractors have called it the Dead Kennedy’s “U2” song, but I disagree. “Moon Over Marin” is more melodic than most DK, but juxtaposed with the darkness of the lyrics, the song evokes a powerful sense of existential melancholy. I think the concept that struck me, and stuck with me, is that our disrespect of each other and the planet may doom us, but things will continue without us. I think it is healthy to recognize impermanence, but also to appreciate the value of the ephemeral. Moonlight, real or electric, will probably be around, but what it will be casting light on is the real question. There will always be a moon over Biloxi." -Shepard

Shepard Fairey- OBEY Alternative Facts Silkscreen Print by Shepard Fairey- OBEY

Purchase Alternative Facts Hand-Pulled 4-Color Silkscreen Print on Speckletone Fine Art Paper by Artist Shepard Fairey Limited Edition Pop Art Artwork. 2022 Signed & Numbered Limited Edition of XXX Artwork Size 24x24 " We are at a critical moment for the preservation of democracy and non-partisan access to voting for all citizens of voting age. Between the Supreme Court, partisan gerrymandering shaping state legislatures, and the filibuster as a tool of obstruction in Congress, we are already facing tyranny by the minority. The forces dominating our politics do not reflect the values of most Americans. My print, Alternative Facts, addresses the mass confusion about truth that allows the parties who spread the big lie about the 2020 election (and many other lies) fomented the January 6th insurrection and are engaged in voter suppression and other anti-democracy schemes, to flourish unchecked. A portion of proceeds from Alternative Facts will benefit the ACLU in its legal fights against voter suppression and other attacks on the constitution." -Shepard Fairey Shepard Fairey's work is highly political and social, not only because he is incorporating politicians and slogans in it but more importantly because the artist is primarily interested in approaching as many people as possible, exhibiting his work in the covers of the books, which we read, in the music albums, to which we listen, and on the walls of the streets, where we walk. “If I put art in a daring spot, it’s more moving to the viewer and demonstrates my conviction.”, he says. After all, Fairey, in many cases, directly expresses his views on politics and society, whenever he is given the chance. For example, in the aftermath of the “Hope” poster, he commented the following: “Obama has had a really tough time, but there have been a lot of things that he's compromised on that I never would have expected. I mean, drones and domestic spying are the last things I would have thought [he'd support]”. The political aspect of his work can, also, be seen under the spectrum of Fairey’s activism and humanitarian activity. Many of his works have been created as part of activism campaigns or were sold to support causes relevant to the Arts, animal rights, poverty, medical research, the environment, etc. The artist, however, doesn’t identify himself as an activist: “People ask me if I’m an activist, and my answer is no. I’m an artist with a point of view, but I want to do my part to supplement activist causes I believe in. I feel fortunate to connect with people who find my imagery useful and help spread it.”

Published by Obey Giant, Los Angeles The "We Own the Future" silkscreen print by Shepard Fairey is part of his OBEY Giant series, which has become a hallmark of his street artist and graphic designer work. Known for his bold, iconic imagery and thought-provoking messages, Fairey has created numerous artworks that inspire conversation and challenge societal norms. "We Own the Future" is no exception. The print features a striking design with a central figure surrounded by bold typography and a collage of patterns and shapes. The artwork evokes a sense of empowerment and optimism, encouraging the viewer to consider their role in shaping the future. As with many of Fairey's works, the piece incorporates his signature use of color, particularly red, to create a strong visual impact. Although Shepard Fairey is often associated with his iconic "Hope" poster featuring Barack Obama during the 2008 presidential campaign, "We Own the Future" does not have any direct connection to Obama. Instead, this artwork is part of Fairey's broader body of work, which encompasses a range of themes and messages that often revolve around social issues, activism, and the power of the individual.

The message of the print is a call to action for people to take ownership of their future and to strive for positive change in the world. It speaks to Fairey's belief in the power of grassroots activism and the ability of individuals to effect change through their actions. This current crucial moment in history calls for a gathering of momentum where Asian diaspora voices should go loud and proud. The fossil fuel industries have tremendous power economically, but we now know that not only are fossil fuel sources finite but that using them is terrible for climate change and, therefore, the eco-systems that sustain life on our planet. Unfortunately, due to the political power of these industries and public apathy about climate change, the government subsidizes the fossil fuel industries for billions even as they damage the environment. The government works for the citizens, so the choice is ours. Do we support endless power for wealthy fossil fuel corporations? Or policies that put the earth first with the planet before profits? Signed & Numbered Screen Print  OPEN MINDS 36 inches by 24 inches Edition of 675 February 3, 2022 This “Open Minds” print references the language used by the powerful fuel industry lobby to soften political and public resistance to fracking. Fracking is a form of gas extraction which beyond the carbon impact of the gas itself, contaminates groundwater, pollutes the air, and creates strains on water resources because of the high volume of water required for the fracking process. Open-mindedness about any of those detrimental impacts of fracking and other fossil fuel extraction is absurd if one cares about the environment, air and water quality, and global warming. Powerful corporations and their lobbyists spend exorbitant sums to distract from and discredit the science-based conversation about the environment. I’m all for open minds and open eyes when it comes to putting science and the welfare of the planet before corporate profits. Screenprint on thick cream Speckletone paper. Numbered edition of 600.  "I based this “Eyes on the King Verdict” print on photos taken by Ted Soqui during the LA riots of spring 1992. Ted has a long history of photographing activists and protests, which began after the “not guilty” verdicts on April 29, 1992, for the four officers who severely beat Rodney King. I especially love the central pic of a young woman protester in a Malcolm X hat contemplating the scene. I think it is important to consider the symbolic weight of the Rodney King verdict and the emotional impact on communities of color seeking justice and accountability. At the time, 30 years ago, I remember feeling enraged that such a blatant act of police brutality was going unpunished when it was captured on video. It is heartbreaking how frequently similar acts of violence and abuse of power by law enforcement have gone unpunished, even when caught on camera. I don’t ever condone violence or looting, but I understand why LA erupted in riots and protests after the King verdict. When people feel that the American system has failed them repeatedly, things can reach a boiling point. The urge to protest injustice and the right to do so are legitimate, even if looting is not legitimate. The LA riots were a tragic mixture. However, beware of those who try to conflate protest with “criminal agitation” or “inciting a riot.” When the system fails the people, it is nothing short of patriotic for the people to protest for a solution. Ted Soqui and I both signed the “Eyes on the King Verdict” print.” – Shepard

At the time, I wanted to address the very unique situation we were in as a country as we faced the Covid-19 pandemic, unrest around police brutality and racial discrimination, voter suppression, and intense political division. We are still facing all of those things, though the development of Covid vaccines has significantly improved public safety and benefitted the fight to end the pandemic. In this illustration, the usually clear-cut rebel symbol of a bandana covering a face takes on a different meaning during Covid, becoming an emblem of safety, respect for one’s fellow citizens, and a sign that the wearer believes in science.

Numbered edition of 350.  "These “Factory Stacks” images combine the austere, angular power of factory architecture with graphic elements commenting on what we promote and embrace as a society even when those things are destructive. Please read Naomi Klein’s THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING to better understand the conflict between economic interests and climate change. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this print will go to Greenpeace to fight climate change. Thanks for caring.” – Shepard

This can range from direct messages and caricatures to more subtle, abstract representations. It's a platform for these groups to assert their identity and share their stories with the wider public. Calls for action and change: Graffiti can be a powerful medium to inspire change and demand social or political reforms. Some artists use their work to mobilize public opinion or encourage people to participate in activism. Satire and humor: Many artists incorporate humor and satire into their work to critique the status quo or to expose hypocrisy, corruption, or incompetence in politics. This approach can be an effective way to capture attention and make a statement. Celebration of political victories or achievements: Some graffiti street pop art celebrates political progress or important milestones, such as the election of a progressive leader or the passage of important legislation. Propaganda and counter-propaganda: Graffiti can be used by political factions to spread their messages and ideas, either in support of their cause or in opposition to their rivals. This can result in a visual battle of ideologies on the streets. Overall, graffiti street pop art has played a significant role in politics, providing a powerful platform for artists to engage with their audience and make their voices heard.
