Shepard Fairey- OBEY The High Cost Of Free Speech Silkscreen Print by Shepard Fairey- OBEY

Purchase The High Cost Of Free Speech Limited Edition 2-Color Hand-Pulled Silkscreen Print on Speckled Cream Paper by Shepard Fairey graffiti street artist modern pop art. Punk rock ignited a lot of creative and philosophical things for me, and punk principles continuously remind me that speaking truth to power and questioning authority is paramount in life. The Dead Kennedys, The Clash, Black Flag, and the Circle Jerks are just a few of the groups that referenced injustices such as police brutality and abuse of power in their songs, inspiring me to speak out about the same subjects through my art. I have made a lot of lasting friendships through punk rock and its cultural offshoots. One of those friends is Sean Bonner, who began ordering my prints in the ’90s while he was art director for punk label Victory Records.

  • Freedom/Prosperity At Any Price- Red Silkscreen Print by Cleon Peterson

Cleon Peterson Freedom/Prosperity At Any Price- Red Silkscreen Print by Cleon Peterson

Purchase Freedom/Prosperity At Any Price- Red Limited Edition Hand Pulled 2-Color Screenprint Print on 290gsm Arches Rag Paper with Deckled Edges by Cleon Peterson graffiti street artist modern pop art.  Hand-pulled 18 x 24" screenprint. Printed on 290gsm Arches Rag paper with deckled edges. Each print is signed and numbered. Limited edition of 125. The visuality of Cleon Peterson's work is based on a variety of influences, from ancient Greek pottery to comics, resulting in monochromacy and strong color symbolism. In more detail, the figures exist on multiple straight lines, something that, subsequently, creates the illusion that the artwork is divided in levels. The perspective and the impression of depth do moderately exist in the art of Peterson and, just like in Greek vases, the background space is usually left empty or slightly embellished.

Signed & Numbered, Bias by Numbers  30 inches by 42 inches Edition of 89 June 3, 2019  “Bias by Numbers” addresses racial bias in policing, criminal justice, and media culture. Racial bias in policing and criminal justice has a long history, including stats like – black people being five times more likely to be stopped and searched than white people, and four times more likely to be subjected to unnecessary use of force, or four times more likely to be killed by the police when unarmed. The statistics revealing racial bias in prosecution and sentencing are compelling as well. Though recreational drug use is equally common in both predominantly black communities and predominantly white communities, convictions for drug possession are almost six times higher for blacks. Blacks frequently receive longer prison sentences than whites contributing to African Americans being incarcerated at more than five times the rate of whites.

Purchase Icarus Democracy 3-Color Hand-Pulled Limited Edition Silkscreen Print on Cream Speckle Tone Paper by Shepard Fairey Rare Street Art OBEY Pop Artwork Artist. 2022 Signed & Numbered Limited Edition of 500 Artwork Size 24x36 "Liberty and equality are principles most people value, but the challenge is to find the proper equilibrium between the two. Democracy is the mechanism our nation has used to balance the freedom and desires of the individual with policies that are fair and beneficial for the collective of society. Democracy requires dedicated maintenance. With the culture of the previous administration and many politicians undermining democracy itself, the folly of over-confidence about the guaranteed endurance of democracy will lead to potential disaster. The threat of fascism is very real. If you value democracy use your voice and your vote. I’d recommend reading Timothy Snyders “On Tyranny” to anyone who does not see the threats to democracy (and the principles it protects) as concerning. This print, “Icarus Democracy,” will also be available in person at Dallas Contemporary." -Shepard Fairey The Icarus Democracy Silkscreen Print is a piece of art created by Shepard Fairey, an American contemporary street artist, graphic designer, and activist. In the Icarus Democracy Silkscreen Print, Fairey uses the myth of Icarus to convey a message about democracy. In Greek mythology, Icarus is a figure who, along with his father Daedalus, escapes imprisonment using wings fashioned from feathers and wax. Despite being warned by his father, Icarus flies too close to the sun, causing the wax in his wings to melt and sending him plummeting into the sea. The story of Icarus is often interpreted as a cautionary tale about hubris and the perils of overconfidence or overreaching. Fairey's print likely uses the Icarus story to comment on the state of democracy, suggesting that democracies can also fall victim to hubris and overconfidence, resulting in negative consequences. Or maybe it's just fearmongering? The piece serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance in preserving and protecting democratic values and institutions both ironically and literally. The artwork, like many of Fairey's pieces, is created using the silkscreen printing technique. This process involves using a screen to apply ink onto a surface, creating bold, vibrant images. The Icarus Democracy Silkscreen Print showcases Fairey's signature style, characterized by strong lines, bold colors, and iconic imagery, featuring portraiture & symbols that can be easily recognized and interpreted by a wide audience.

Signed by Shepard Fairey.  Numbered edition of 100. Jim Marshall's photograph of a coal mining family in Hazard, Kentucky, taken while he lived with them, says a lot with what it shows, which is a mother and two children huddled together in support of each other, but it says just as much with what it lacks. There is a conspicuous absence of material necessities and a father. I don't know whether the father was working in a coal mine when the photograph was taken or had potentially died young because of the health risks of working under dangerous conditions, but it is clear that the family is struggling and lacking.

White Variant Signed & Numbered Moon Over Biloxi  Screen Print 18 x 24 inches Edition of 200 July 27, 2010. "The title of this print “Moon Over Biloxi” is a tribute to the  Dead Kennedy’s song “Moon Over Marin”. In 1984 I picked up maybe my 4th punk record which was the 2nd Dead Kennedy’s album “Plastic Surgery Disasters”. The album is a great listen all the way through and includes some blistering tunes like “Riot” and “Bleed For Me” laced with social commentary. The surprise song though is “Moon Over Marin”… detractors have called it the Dead Kennedy’s “U2” song, but I disagree. “Moon Over Marin” is more melodic than most DK, but juxtaposed with the darkness of the lyrics, the song evokes a powerful sense of existential melancholy. I think the concept that struck me, and stuck with me, is that our disrespect of each other and the planet may doom us, but things will continue without us. I think it is healthy to recognize impermanence, but also to appreciate the value of the ephemeral. Moonlight, real or electric, will probably be around, but what it will be casting light on is the real question. There will always be a moon over Biloxi." -Shepard

  • Alternative Facts Silkscreen Print by Shepard Fairey- OBEY

Shepard Fairey- OBEY Alternative Facts Silkscreen Print by Shepard Fairey- OBEY

Purchase Alternative Facts Hand-Pulled 4-Color Silkscreen Print on Speckletone Fine Art Paper by Artist Shepard Fairey Limited Edition Pop Art Artwork. 2022 Signed & Numbered Limited Edition of XXX Artwork Size 24x24 " We are at a critical moment for the preservation of democracy and non-partisan access to voting for all citizens of voting age. Between the Supreme Court, partisan gerrymandering shaping state legislatures, and the filibuster as a tool of obstruction in Congress, we are already facing tyranny by the minority. The forces dominating our politics do not reflect the values of most Americans. My print, Alternative Facts, addresses the mass confusion about truth that allows the parties who spread the big lie about the 2020 election (and many other lies) fomented the January 6th insurrection and are engaged in voter suppression and other anti-democracy schemes, to flourish unchecked. A portion of proceeds from Alternative Facts will benefit the ACLU in its legal fights against voter suppression and other attacks on the constitution." -Shepard Fairey Shepard Fairey's work is highly political and social, not only because he is incorporating politicians and slogans in it but more importantly because the artist is primarily interested in approaching as many people as possible, exhibiting his work in the covers of the books, which we read, in the music albums, to which we listen, and on the walls of the streets, where we walk. “If I put art in a daring spot, it’s more moving to the viewer and demonstrates my conviction.”, he says. After all, Fairey, in many cases, directly expresses his views on politics and society, whenever he is given the chance. For example, in the aftermath of the “Hope” poster, he commented the following: “Obama has had a really tough time, but there have been a lot of things that he's compromised on that I never would have expected. I mean, drones and domestic spying are the last things I would have thought [he'd support]”. The political aspect of his work can, also, be seen under the spectrum of Fairey’s activism and humanitarian activity. Many of his works have been created as part of activism campaigns or were sold to support causes relevant to the Arts, animal rights, poverty, medical research, the environment, etc. The artist, however, doesn’t identify himself as an activist: “People ask me if I’m an activist, and my answer is no. I’m an artist with a point of view, but I want to do my part to supplement activist causes I believe in. I feel fortunate to connect with people who find my imagery useful and help spread it.”

This art form has roots in various cultures and has evolved over the years, playing a significant role in shaping political discourse. Several key aspects of politics in graffiti street pop art include: Social and political critique: Artists often use graffiti as a medium to express their dissent or opposition to specific issues, policies, or political figures. This can range from direct messages and caricatures to more subtle, abstract representations. Representation of marginalized groups: Graffiti street pop art has often been a way for underrepresented communities to voice their concerns and struggles. It's a platform for these groups to assert their identity and share their stories with the wider public. Calls for action and change: Graffiti can be a powerful medium to inspire change and demand social or political reforms. Some artists use their work to mobilize public opinion or encourage people to participate in activism. Satire and humor: Many artists incorporate humor and satire into their work to critique the status quo or to expose hypocrisy, corruption, or incompetence in politics. This approach can be an effective way to capture attention and make a statement. Celebration of political victories or achievements: Some graffiti street pop art celebrates political progress or important milestones, such as the election of a progressive leader or the passage of important legislation. Propaganda and counter-propaganda: Graffiti can be used by political factions to spread their messages and ideas, either in support of their cause or in opposition to their rivals. This can result in a visual battle of ideologies on the streets. Overall, graffiti street pop art has played a significant role in politics, providing a powerful platform for artists to engage with their audience and make their voices heard. The public nature of this art form means it can reach a wide audience, often challenging the mainstream narrative and contributing to a more diverse and inclusive political discourse.
