Matthew Grabelsky

Matthew Grabelsky is a Los Angeles-based artist known for his surreal and whimsical paintings that often feature human-animal hybrid figures in everyday urban environments. Born in 1980, Grabelsky studied art and astrophysics at Rice University before pursuing a career in art. Grabelsky's work is characterized by its blending of realistic and fantastical elements. Many of his paintings depict anthropomorphic creatures – often with the heads of animals and bodies of humans – engaging in seemingly mundane activities, such as riding public transportation, reading, or conversing with one another. These animal-headed characters in Grabelsky's paintings are often inspired by mythology and folklore, as well as his own childhood experiences visiting the Natural History Museum and the zoo. By incorporating these fantastical figures into everyday settings, Grabelsky challenges the viewer's perception of reality and invites them to explore the connection between the human and animal worlds. His works have been exhibited in galleries across the United States and internationally, garnering attention and praise from critics and collectors alike. In addition to his fine art career, Grabelsky has also worked in the film industry as a matte painter and concept artist.
