Sinew Limited Edition Archival Pigment Prints on 310gsm Fine Art Paper by Aaron Nagel Graffiti Street Artist Modern Pop Art. "This piece was created for the “20 Years Under the Influence of Juxtapoz” show curated by Thinkspace and Copro that opened in LA last month. It’s still up actually, at the LA Municipal Art Gallery at Barnsdale Park. This was the first larger piece in a while that wasn’t created as part of a larger body of work actually. I’m in-between shows at the moment, so right now I’m trying some new things, playing with new ideas that may or may not carry over into a larger body of work. This piece has since led me into some much weirder territory — that will hopefully see the light of day." - Aaron Nagel

  • Lady With Sphinx Original Oil on Linen Painting by Aaron Nagel

Aaron Nagel Lady With Sphinx Original Oil on Linen Painting by Aaron Nagel

Lady With Sphinx Original Painting Oil On Linen Mounted To Wood With Frame by Aaron Nagel Graffiti Street Artist Modern Pop Art. 2015 Signed Original Oil Painting Framed by Aaron Negal Measuring 26x30 "'Lady With a Sphinx" was humbly modeled after the Leonardo DaVinci painting, "Lady With An Ermine." It is my second attempt at a painting modeled after a classic, the first being my version (of Bouguereau’s version) of the Piéta. I have always liked "Lady With An Ermine;" the lighting on the figure, the stark background, the lettering in the upper left-hand corner, and of course, the Ermine (because what the fuck is an ermine?!)Trying to get the reference photo looking similar was a challenge, but an enjoyable one, as I never have a concrete idea of how I want a reference to look, so there tends to be a lot of trial and error. This time, I messed with it until the pose and lighting were right, then just took a few hundred pictures there, with very subtle pose and expression changes. This piece was painted for the “Three Figures” exhibition at Maxwell Alexander Gallery in June of 2014. It was a 3-man show, with Jeremy Mann, Sean Cheetham, and myself. They are two of my favorite artists, so it was a huge honor to show with them." - Aaron Nagel

Aaron Nagel - Sprayed Paint Art Collection

The Artistic Journey of Aaron Nagel

Aaron Nagel, an American artist born in 1980 in San Francisco, California, stands as a notable figure within the contemporary art scene. Although he may not fall directly into the traditional categories of Street Pop Art or Graffiti Artwork, Nagel's work engages with pop culture and contemporary themes that resonate with the boldness and spirit often found in these genres. Known for his striking, realistic oil paintings, Nagel explores themes of human experience, often through the lens of meticulously rendered human forms, particularly focusing on the subtleties and expressiveness of the female figure.

Development of a Distinct Style

Nagel's approach to art is characterized by an almost reverential treatment of the human form coupled with a critical engagement with themes of beauty, spirituality, and existentialism. His background as a self-taught artist has allowed him to develop a unique style, unencumbered by the constraints of traditional art education. This freedom is evident in his precise technique and the creative risks he takes with each new piece. Nagel’s paintings often juxtapose the serene, classical beauty of his subjects with elements of stark, modern realism, creating a tension that invites viewers to delve deeper into the visual narrative. The most striking aspect of Nagel's work is his mastery of light and shadow, which he uses to sculpt the figures on the canvas, giving them a luminous quality that seems almost divine. This technique not only highlights the physical beauty of his subjects but also imbues them with a sense of vulnerability and strength. His frequent use of religious and symbolic imagery adds layers of meaning to his paintings, encouraging a contemplative engagement with the artwork.

Nagel's Contributions and Collaborations

Throughout his career, Aaron Nagel has contributed significantly to various exhibitions and artistic collaborations that span beyond the conventional gallery space. His works have been showcased in numerous solo and group exhibitions across the United States, each presentation building on his reputation as a painter with a profound ability to capture the complexities of human emotion and beauty. Beyond the canvas, Nagel’s artistic reach extends into the music industry, where he has made his mark as a musician and graphic designer. His involvement in the music scene, particularly in punk and rock bands, has influenced his artistic style, infusing it with an edgy, dynamic quality that complements his classical training. This intersection of music and visual art exemplifies Nagel's versatility and his ability to resonate with a broad audience, bridging diverse cultural expressions.

Legacy and Influence

Aaron Nagel remains an influential figure in contemporary art, continuously evolving and challenging conventional boundaries. His commitment to exploring new themes and techniques keeps his work fresh and relevant, appealing to a diverse audience of art enthusiasts and collectors. By integrating elements of classical art with contemporary themes, Nagel creates a dialogue between the past and the present, making his work a fascinating study in contrasts. Nagel's influence also extends into mentoring emerging artists, where he shares his knowledge and experiences to inspire the next generation. His dedication to the craft of painting and his willingness to explore complex and often controversial themes make him a pivotal figure in the art community. As he continues to develop his artistic vision, Aaron Nagel not only captures the beauty of the human form but also prompts a deeper reflection on the human condition, making his work a significant contribution to the fields of both traditional and contemporary art.
