In the vast realm of pop art, street art, and graffiti, "War By Numbers" stands as a testament to art's ability to transcend aesthetic appeal, challenging viewers to confront and engage with the world's most pressing issues.

Ernesto Yerena Montejano has established himself as a prominent figure in pop and street art, bringing forth a unique perspective that reflects his bicultural experience. This piece captures the dynamic essence of street art while being crafted with the precision and durability of fine art practices. Collectors and admirers of "Sky High" are drawn to its powerful visual statement and the meticulous craftsmanship of the hand-pulled print. Yerena’s work is not merely a decorative piece but an emblem of cultural pride and political expression. These encapsulating themes resonate deeply within the Mexican-American community and among advocates of pop art's power to communicate beyond words. The limited availability of "Sky High" makes it not just a piece of art but a slice of cultural history, embodying the spirit of a community that continues to soar against challenges, much like the eagles depicted in its design.

Particularly, I so remember the early 90’s and seeing a lot of Raider, Charger, Chivas de Guadalajara and America jersey’s and of course those of the Dodger’s and their blue and white hats with the iconic LA blazoned on the front. But my immediate family was different. My dad who in the early 1990’s sold automotive paint and painted cars was surprisingly not that much into the usual sports but all except for BOXING! At that point in time I remember the gatherings at my house when there was a Julio Ces One- Rob Provenzano ar Chavez fight, a De La Hoya fight or a Maromero Paez fight. My dad would bring the TV outside, set-up a bunch of chairs, roll out the grill, fire up the mesquite and lay down the marinated carne asada before the first round bell. I remember how much fun those days were and how much pride people had in the Mexican fighters." -Ernesto Yerena Montejano

Ernesto Yerena Montejano: Artistic Voice for Social Change

Ernesto Yerena Montejano, also known by his studio name Hecho Con Ganas, is a prominent figure whose work has created significant ripples in street pop art and graffiti artwork. Born on November 17, 1981, in El Centro, California, a town that borders Mexicali, BC, MX, Montejano's cross-national upbringing has deeply influenced his art practice. His works reflect his observations and interactions between the Mexican communities on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border. Montejano's identity as a Mexican-American artist and his commitment to social change drive his bold designs and powerful messages. His art is a fusion of cultural symbols and modern-day commentary, often highlighting the struggles and experiences of Chicano and indigenous peoples. He is recognized for his visually striking artwork and activism, which is deeply rooted in his identity and personal experiences.

Activism Through Art: The Hecho Con Ganas Initiative

In 2008, Montejano embarked on an endeavor that would define much of his career: the Hecho Con Ganas publishing project. This initiative aimed to create politically and socially conscious images produced as limited edition silkscreen prints. The project is a testament to his ability to translate complex social and political messages into visual art that resonates with a diverse audience. His activism was further exemplified by his role as the founder and curator of the Alto Arizona Art campaign in 2010,. As a founding member of the, We Are Human campaign, both of which aim to promote social justice through artistic expression. The artwork produced under the Hecho Con Ganas label is characterized by its vibrant use of color and geometric shapes, a style inspired by California's psychedelic art movement and Montejano's cultural heritage. His graphic design practice is not merely about creating aesthetically pleasing images; it's about bringing attention to the issues faced by Indigenous and Brown communities, using art as a tool for advocacy, and bringing about societal change.

The Cultural Tapestry of Montejano's Artwork

Ernesto Yerena Montejano's work is a cultural tapestry that weaves together the narratives of those who are often marginalized. By infusing his artwork with culturally significant and politically charged symbols, he offers commentary on identity, struggle, and resilience. His pieces often serve as a visual form of resistance and empowerment, capturing the essence of street pop art and graffiti as mediums for voicing dissent and rallying communities. Montejano's artistry goes beyond the canvas; it embodies the voice of the voiceless. Through Hecho Con Ganas, he challenges viewers to confront social injustices and recognize the power of community and collective action. His works are displayed on gallery walls and in the streets, where they become part of the urban landscape, accessible to all and sundry. In the world of street pop art and graffiti, Ernesto Yerena Montejano stands out as an artist who captures the zeitgeist of our times and shapes it. His dedication to blending artistic practice with social activism makes his work a powerful instrument for change, a beacon of hope and strength for communities fighting for their rights and identity. Through his art, Montejano continues to inspire and provoke, making him one of his generation's most significant street pop artists.
