Revolution in our Time Silkscreen Print by Shepard Fairey- OBEY Hand-Pulled 5-Color on Cream Speckletone Fine Art Paper Limited Edition Artwork Obey Pop Culture Artist. 2020 Signed & Numbered Limited Edition of 500 Artwork Size 18x24 Silkscreen Print "Oct 1 is the 70th anniversary of Communist Party rule in China and the Chinese government is planning an extravaganza of choreographed contentment in the mainland while the people of Hong Kong will hit the streets in an effort to secure their rights. I’ve long believed that protests in the streets are an essential tool for meaningful change because the passion, courage, and visceral force of the participants in a mass protest send a powerful message that they are fully committed to their cause! Ed Nachtrieb photographed many incredible moments of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. I’m honored to collaborate with Ed on a set of two images based on his documentation 30 years ago, especially because pro-democracy and human-rights protesters are in the streets of Hong Kong right now! This image “Long Live The People” will be released as a print soon… more details to come. Check out Ed Nachtrieb’s thoughts on the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests." -Shepard Fairey- OBEY "After the People’s Liberation Army was sent in to suppress what is now called the “pro-democracy movement” on June 4, 1989, there was a liberalization of economic rules and policies. China then experienced a remarkable economic transformation. The idea: if people could get rich, they wouldn’t care so much about their freedoms. I think that’s a miscalculation. In Hong Kong today, ideas championed in 1989 have reappeared in a “Revolution of Our Time” in spite of the campaign to erase such “counter-revolutionary” thoughts from history. My images used in these prints are from energetic and optimistic moments of the pro-democracy movement. Victory was in the air. Progress seemed inevitable to those with arms outstretched and smiles beaming from their faces. Shepard’s work reflects their hopes and aspirations. The same ones that fortified those protesters in 1989 are now fuel for the passionate idealists on the streets today." -Edward Nachtrieb Shepard Fairey's "Revolution in Our Time" silkscreen print is a compelling narrative connecting past and present struggles for democracy and human rights. This piece, released in 2020, commemorates the 70th anniversary of Communist Party rule in China, juxtaposing the state's celebrations with the unyielding spirit of protest in Hong Kong. Fairey's collaboration with photographer Ed Nachtrieb is particularly significant, as it draws on images captured during the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, thereby linking historical acts of resistance to contemporary movements. The artwork is a hand-pulled, 5-color print on cream speckletone fine art paper. With its size of 18x24 inches, the piece commands attention, demanding consideration not just as a visual expression but as a statement of solidarity. The edition is limited to 550 signed and numbered prints, making each a tangible artifact of political artistry. Fairey's design is charged with symbols of peace and resilience, as evidenced by the dove and the raised hand, iconic gestures of defiance and hope. Fairey is known for his stance that street protests are a crucial mechanism for social change, and this belief is visually encoded in the print. His art is not passive; it is an active participant in the dialogue around civil liberties and the collective voice of the people. "Revolution in Our Time" does more than commemorate an event; it propels the message of protest into the future, encouraging a reflection on the nature of authority and the power of the people's will. This limited edition print captures the essence of Shepard Fairey's approach to art as a form of rebellion and communication. It speaks to a universal yearning for freedom and justice, transcending borders and historical moments to unite viewers in a common cause. The work stands as a beacon to civic engagement's enduring relevance and visual art's impact in mobilizing and inspiring change within societies.

  • Fragile Cargo AP Silkscreen Print by Shepard Fairey- OBEY

Shepard Fairey- OBEY Fragile Cargo AP Silkscreen Print by Shepard Fairey- OBEY

Fragile Cargo AP Silkscreen Print by Shepard Fairey- OBEY Artist Proof Hand-Pulled Screen Print on Fine Art Paper Limited Edition Pop Street Art Artwork. AP Artist Proof 2022 Signed & AP Marked Original Run Limited Edition Artwork Size 18x24 Silkscreen Print of Elephant & Woman Face With Stylized Vintage Airline Ticket Influence. "This OBEY Fragile Cargo poster is a fusion of a few inspirations. The elephant and my wife Amanda meditating relate to the Buddhist philosophy that humans are part of nature, not above it, and must live in harmony with nature. The phrase "Rise Above" references transcendence but is also one of my favorite Black Flag songs. The graphic elements also reference the aesthetics of travel tags and tickets, which present a dichotomy… travel is great for broadening cultural perspective, but it has a heavy carbon impact. Karma asks us to consider the benefits and consequences of our actions. All of my prints are printed on recycled or sustainable paper. A portion of the proceeds from this print will benefit Greenpeace to support their work to enhance environmental protections and combat climate change." -Shepard Fairey. Delving into pop and street art, the "Fragile Cargo AP" silkscreen print by renowned artist Shepard Fairey is a testament to the dynamic confluence of art, philosophy, and environmental consciousness. Hand-pulled and crafted meticulously on fine art paper, this limited edition artist proof from 2022 manifests an intricate fusion of inspiration sources. The composition, with its arresting visuals of an elephant juxtaposed with the serene face of Fairey's wife, Amanda, draws heavily from Buddhist philosophy. The art underscores the interdependence of humanity and nature, emphasizing the belief that humans do not preside over nature but are inherently a part of it. This intricate blend of artistic expression with philosophical musings is a hallmark of Fairey's work. The term "Rise Above," embedded within the artwork, serves a dual purpose. While it signals transcendence and aligns with the broader philosophical underpinnings of the print, it is also an homage to one of Fairey's favorite songs by Black Flag, a classic American punk rock band. Simultaneously, the design elements, reminiscent of travel tags and vintage airline tickets, invoke a reflection on the complexities of modern travel. The allure of travel, which offers an enriched cultural perspective, is weighed against its environmental impact, specifically the carbon footprint associated with it. Echoing this ecological consciousness, Fairey ensures all his prints are produced on recycled or sustainably sourced paper. Beyond this, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of "Fragile Cargo AP" is dedicated to Greenpeace, highlighting Fairey's commitment to supporting environmental causes and combating the dire challenges of climate change. Through this artwork, Shepard Fairey weaves an intricate tapestry of visual splendor, philosophical depth, and environmental advocacy, reaffirming his position as a luminary in pop and street art.

Animal Activism & Protest Graffiti Street Pop Artwork

Animal Activism in the Realm of Street Art

Animal activism has found a powerful ally in street pop art and graffiti, where artists around the globe have taken to the streets to create visuals that advocate for the rights and welfare of animals. This form of activism harnesses the public and democratic nature of street art to bring attention to the plight of animals, challenging passersby to consider the moral implications of their interactions with and treatment of non-human beings. Animal activism has been a prominent theme in various art forms, and graffiti street pop art is no exception. Graffiti artists often use their creative abilities to raise awareness about important social and environmental issues; animal rights are a topic that resonates with many. By incorporating animal activism themes into their work, graffiti artists can provoke thought and spark conversations around the treatment of animals, factory farming, and wildlife conservation. Here are some ways in which animal activism can be integrated into graffiti street pop art: Eye-catching murals: Graffiti artists can create large, attention-grabbing murals that showcase animals in their natural habitats or depict the cruelty of certain practices such as factory farming or animal testing. These works can serve as a stark reminder of the realities many animals face and encourage viewers to consider the implications of their actions. Animal portraits: Artists can create striking portraits of endangered or mistreated animals to raise awareness about their plights. These portraits can humanize the animals and evoke empathy from viewers, encouraging them to learn more about the issues and take action. Thought-provoking slogans: Graffiti art can include text and slogans that challenge the status quo and prompt reflection. Artists can incorporate phrases such as "End Factory Farming," "Cruelty-Free," or "Protect Wildlife" to highlight animal activism issues and encourage change. Symbolism and metaphor: Artists can use symbolism and metaphors to create thought-provoking artwork underscoring the connection between humans and animals. For example, they might depict animals wearing human clothing or participating in human activities to emphasize our shared experiences and the importance of treating all living beings with respect and compassion. Collaborations with animal rights organizations: Graffiti artists can partner with animal rights organizations to create street art campaigns that raise awareness about specific issues or events. These collaborations can amplify the message and reach a wider audience, promoting animal activism on a larger scale. Interactive art installations: Artists can create interactive installations that invite the public to engage with the issue of animal activism. For example, they could create a mural where passersby can add their messages or artwork supporting animal rights, creating a collective piece that reflects the community's concerns. Stencil art: Stencil art can be a quick and effective way to spread a message. Artists can create stencils of animal rights-related images or phrases and apply them to various surfaces around the city, creating a visual reminder of the importance of animal activism. Incorporating QR codes and augmented reality: To further engage viewers and provide additional information, artists can incorporate QR codes or augmented reality elements into their artwork. When scanned or viewed through a mobile device, these codes can lead to informative websites or videos that provide more context and resources about animal activism. Using their talent and creativity, graffiti street pop artists have the power to generate awareness and inspire change around animal activism.

Street Pop Art's Role in the Animal Rights Movement

In their quest to promote animal activism, street artists often portray animals in situations that call attention to their suffering or exploitation. These artworks are poignant reminders of the oft-overlooked creatures that share our planet. Murals might depict animals in captivity, contrasted with their natural habitats, to highlight the stark difference between their lives in the wild and confinement. Other pieces may feature endangered species, bringing awareness to the issues of habitat destruction and human encroachment. Creating such pieces in public means that animal activism art is accessible to all, circumventing traditional media channels that may neglect these issues. By placing these messages in urban environments, the artists link the daily lives of city dwellers with the broader ecological web, reminding them that urban life does not exist in isolation from the natural world. Street pop art, with its roots in rebellion and subversion, naturally aligns with the objectives of the animal rights movement. It is a form of visual protest that can be simultaneously beautiful and unsettling. Artists utilize a variety of styles, from hyper-realistic depictions to abstract representations, to convey their messages. Some may employ shock tactics, while others opt for a more empathetic approach, inviting onlookers to empathize with the subjects of their art. The power of street pop art in animal activism lies in its ability to start conversations and prompt personal reflections on animal rights issues. Artists like Banksy have brought international attention to animal activism through their work, using their art to criticize practices such as animal testing, the meat industry, and the use of fur in fashion. The intersection of animal activism and street art is potent, offering a canvas for raising awareness, inciting change, and expressing solidarity with the non-human inhabitants of our world. These artworks beautify the urban landscape and imbue it with a sense of purpose and urgency, advocating for the protection and respect of all living beings.
