Mickey Hiroshima Limited Edition Archival Pigment Prints on 290gsm Moab Fine Art Rag Paper by Jeff Gillette Graffiti Street Artist Modern Pop Art. 2013 Signed & Numbered Limited Edition of 30 Size 14x9 "I am from the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan. In the late 1980s, I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Nepal for two years. During this two-year stint, I visited every major city in India, finding myself exploring the huge slums found there. On my return home, I moved from the Mid-West to escape the snow to teach High School Art in Orange County, California. Since finishing my MFA at Cal State Fullerton, I have been exhibiting in galleries both at home and abroad. My work is most often landscapes. A major portion of my output is paintings of slums of the developing world, where I often add an element of western cultural privilege (and oblivion) into settings of urban blight. Inspiration for what I call “Slumscapes” comes from the first-hand experience of traveling. Most often I return over and over to my favorite destination: India. In the vast poverty-stricken fringes of its vast megalopolises, I trip out on how the economic disparities are obscenely extreme. I’ve been spending a lot of time in Mumbai slums: photographing, filming, creating Plein Aire paintings, and creating interactive street art. Besides depicting slums, my artwork portrays post-apocalyptic debris fields, landfills, and detritus-cluttered deserts. The Juxtaposition of Disney themes and beloved characters (i.e.: Mickey Mouse) with all these dystopias best conveys my personal views. Pondering contemporary social, political, economical and philosophical conundrums, I can’t help but feel absurdly helpless, pessimistic and humored about the future of Western Civilization…" - Jeff Gillette

These images are not merely placed together but interwoven to create a narrative that speaks to the artist's and the viewer's shared cultural experiences. Subversion and Satire in Ben Frost's Art Frost's piece is a satirical nod to the recognition and rewards system prevalent in corporate culture, highlighted by the badge "Employee of the Month" amidst the chaotic backdrop of consumerist icons. The artwork delves into the themes of identity and recognition in a world saturated with branding and marketing messages. Each character and symbol is meticulously chosen to reflect the absurdity and sometimes the emptiness that can accompany the pursuit of accolades in a capitalist society. His signature not only authenticates the work but also marks it as an integral component of his artistic narrative, which often challenges the viewer to reconsider their relationship with the pervasive imagery of consumer culture. This print stands as a testament to Frost's ability to create art that is both accessible and complex, offering a multifaceted critique of the world we navigate daily. Crafted in 2016, this work is part of a limited series, each piece bearing the artist's signature and numbered P1 out of 150, marking its exclusivity and importance as a collector's item. The collaboration between these two stalwarts of the street art scene synthesizes their distinct artistic voices into a unified visual statement that resonates with the energy and ethos of the urban landscape from which it draws inspiration. OG Slick, whose roots are firmly planted in the street culture of Los Angeles, brings his iconic imagery to the collaboration. His contributions to the C/S I print are characterized by the cartoon-like gloves that gesture towards the viewer, a direct and impactful use of imagery that has become a signature of his work. This graphical element starkly contrasts the intricate background, inviting a dialogue about the interaction between pop culture and the subversive nature of graffiti art. Signature Elements and Cultural Commentary in C/S I Chaz Bojorquez's influence within the C/S I print is unmistakable. His signature calligraphic style, derived from the Cholo writing of East Los Angeles, provides a rich textual backdrop to Slick's bold graphical elements. The layers of text in print are reminiscent of the palimpsest nature of street art, where messages are layered upon one another, creating a complex tapestry that speaks to the community's pulse. Bojorquez's artistry with letters goes beyond mere aesthetics, delving into the identity politics and social narratives that have always been at the heart of his work. The distressed pearl white finish on the print adds a dimension of age and texture, suggesting a weathered quality often found in street art exposed to the elements. This choice of finish not only enhances the visual depth of the piece but also bridges the gap between the transient nature of street art and the permanence sought by fine art pieces. The Stonehenge White Fine Art Paper, known for its quality and durability, reinforces the intention to preserve the fleeting beauty of street art in a form that stands the test of time. The Limited Edition Nature of C/S I and Its Collectibility The limited edition nature of the C/S I print underscores its value within street pop art and graffiti artwork. The fact that only 150 of these prints exist, each signed by the artists OG Slick and Chaz Bojorquez, elevates the work from mere reproduction to a coveted art piece. Collectors and enthusiasts of street art are drawn to the visual appeal of the work and the cultural capital that such a limited series represents. Owning a piece of this series is akin to holding a fragment of street art history, a snapshot of the moment when two renowned artists converged to leave an indelible mark on the art world. Impact of C/S I on the Perception of Street Art The impact of C/S I goes beyond the boundaries of traditional graffiti and street art. By situating the work within the context of pop art, OG Slick and Chaz Bojorquez challenge the viewer to reconsider the distinctions between high art and urban art forms. The collaboration speaks to the versatility and adaptability of street art, its ability to comment on and absorb influences from various artistic movements, and its persistent quest to gain legitimacy and respect within the art hierarchy. The print's visual elements reflect a sophisticated understanding of cultural symbols, iconography, and the power of the written word, all staples in street pop art and graffiti artwork. The collaboration between OG Slick and Chaz Bojorquez on C/S I is symbolic of a movement that refuses to be categorized simplistically, instead insisting on a complex identity as fluid and vibrant as the streets from which it originates. Through their artistic fusion, these artists contribute to the ongoing narrative of street art as a form that constantly evolves yet remains true to its roots in the urban tapestry.

With this in mind, and in the case of Ben Frost, it is futile to try to identify a clear borderline between low and high art. In reality, the artist wants the audience to think on the terms of high or low value and, by extension, what these actually mean. Over the years street artists have managed to establish themselves as respected creators and some of them have even gained international fame, transforming graffiti from a fringe art, aiming sometimes to mark street gangs’ territory, into big business.

  • Companion Model Drawing Original Graphite Drawing by Robert Lazzarini

Robert Lazzarini Companion Model Drawing Original Graphite Drawing by Robert Lazzarini

Companion Model Drawing Original Graphite Drawing by Robert Lazzarini on Fine Art Paper Modern Street Pop Artwork. 2010 Signed Original Graphite Pencil Drawing Size 11.5x14.5. Robert Lazzarini (b. 1965) Companion Model Drawing, c. 2010 Graphite on paper 14-1/2 x 11-1/2 inches (36.8 x 29.2 cm) (sheet) Signed in pencil to lower right. Exploring Robert Lazzarini's Companion Model Drawing in the Context of Street Pop and Graffiti Art American contemporary artist Robert Lazzarini was born in 1965 and is renowned for his mind-bending sculptures that manipulate everyday items such as guns, chairs, and skulls. These pieces challenge our understanding of reality, incorporating a mix of computer-aided design and traditional sculpting methods. Lazzarini completed his studies at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, earning his BFA in 1990. His artwork has been showcased in numerous galleries and museums across the globe, with some of his most notable exhibitions being held at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Hirshhorn Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Lazzarini's sculptures are famous for their ability to distort and alter our spatial perception. His creations' unconventional shapes and dimensions make the viewer question the objects themselves and the reality they occupy. Lazzarini's artwork challenges us to reconsider our assumptions and preconceptions about the world around us by presenting familiar objects in unfamiliar ways. The art world is an ever-evolving landscape, and within its broad spectrum lies the fusion genre of Street Pop Art, a style that embodies the rebellious spirit of street art with the mass appeal of pop art. It's within this creative milieu that Robert Lazzarini's "Companion Model Drawing," a graphite-on-paper creation, finds its place. This artwork, dating back to circa 2010, represents a significant contribution to the genre, offering a unique blend of street art's grit and pop art's accessible imagery. Born in 1965, Lazzarini has been a prominent figure in the contemporary art scene, known for his distortion of familiar objects and icons, effectively challenging viewers' perceptions and expectations. The "Companion Model Drawing" is a testament to his distinctive approach, as it presents the viewer with a sketch that appears to be simple at first glance but reveals complex undercurrents upon closer inspection. The piece size, 14-1/2 x 11-1/2 inches, is intimate, inviting personal engagement, and the graphite medium gives it a raw, unfinished quality that resonates with the ethos of street art. Interpreting Lazzarini's Artistic Technique and Street Pop Art Aesthetic Lazzarini's work is often characterized by a meticulous technique that belies the chaotic impression it leaves. This is evident in the "Companion Model Drawing," where the lines are deliberate and precise, yet the overall effect is disorientation and altered reality. Though rendered in graphite, this drawing carries the visual weight and immediacy often associated with graffiti artwork. The boldness of the lines and the shading techniques contribute to a three-dimensional effect, making the drawing leap off the fine art paper. While not a traditional example of graffiti art, the artwork embodies the movement's spirit through its engagement with popular culture and subversive elements. The subject of the drawing, which can be described as a deconstructed character, resonates with the iconography typical in street and pop art. Lazzarini's signature in pencil at the bottom right corner adds a personal touch to the piece, anchoring it firmly within the artist's body of work. The Cultural Relevance of Lazzarini's Work in Modern Art Discourse Street Pop Art is not merely an aesthetic; it's a cultural phenomenon that speaks to societal narratives, often acting as a visual language for urban experiences. Lazzarini's "Companion Model Drawing" engages with this dialogue through its subject matter and execution. The choice of a companion model, a figure that could be interpreted as a guide or an alter ego, reflects the personal yet universal themes that street art explores. The artwork blurs the lines between high art and the more democratically accessible street art, embodying the inclusive nature of modern art movements. Moreover, Lazzarini's drawing bridges the immediacy of street art and the enduring nature of fine art. While graffiti is ephemeral, often painted over or washed away, the permanence of graphite on paper allows this piece to become a lasting record of artistic expression. It captures a moment in time within the street pop art movement, preserving it for future generations to appreciate and study. Conclusion: The Impact of Lazzarini's Companion Model Drawing In conclusion, Robert Lazzarini's "Companion Model Drawing" is a significant piece at the intersection of Street Pop Art and Graffiti Artwork. Its execution in graphite on fine art paper transcends the temporary nature of street art, allowing it to be appreciated as a long-lasting artifact. The piece showcases Lazzarini's technical prowess and embodies the essence of street pop art—a blend of subcultural depth and pop culture iconography. As a signed original graphite pencil drawing from 2010, it carries the hallmarks of Lazzarini's style: a thought-provoking distortion of reality that challenges and engages the viewer. This artwork remains a crucial reference point for those interested in the evolution of street-inspired art within contemporary art discourse.

Disney Graffiti Street Pop Art

The Magic on the Walls: Disney's Influence on Street Pop Art

The Walt Disney Company, with its iconic characters and fairy-tale narratives, has left an indelible mark on pop culture that has transcended cinema and television screens to burst onto city walls worldwide. Street pop art and graffiti artwork have often drawn from Disney's vast catalog of characters, reimagining them in various urban contexts to reflect contemporary issues, celebrate nostalgia, or even subvert the very ideals that Disney espouses. The omnipresence of Disney in street art is a testament to the company's pervasive influence on global culture.

Reimagining Disney: A Street Artist's Playground

In street art, Disney characters are reinterpreted through the lenses of myriad artists, each bringing their unique perspective to these beloved icons. With his universal recognizability, Mickey Mouse often appears in graffiti artwork, sometimes as a symbol of innocence and joy, other times as a critique of commercialism and corporate hegemony. The interpretations are as diverse as the artists themselves, ranging from faithful recreations to satirical twists that challenge viewers to see these childhood figures in a new light. Similarly, Disney princesses have been a popular subject, with street artists often using them to discuss themes of femininity, power, and identity. These familiar figures take on new roles in the narrative of street art, transforming from damsels in distress to empowered women, reflecting the changing attitudes towards gender roles in society.

Disney and the Dichotomy of Street Art

The juxtaposition of Disney's often idealized characters against the raw backdrop of the urban landscape creates a dichotomy central to the appeal of using Disney themes in street art. This contrast highlights the tension between the escapism offered by Disney's narratives and the reality of the streets where issues of poverty, inequality, and resistance are more palpable. The use of Disney characters in street pop art is also a dialogue about the commodification of culture and the pervasive nature of branding. Artists sometimes use these characters to comment on consumer culture and the impact of global corporations on individual expression and societal values. Artists disrupt every day by placing characters like Donald Duck or Goofy in unexpected, often incongruous situations, encouraging the public to engage with the art and its issues. Disney's influence on street pop art and graffiti artwork is significant, offering a familiar lexicon with which artists can engage the public in meaningful discourse. Whether through affectionate homage or sharp critique, the incorporation of Disney themes into street art reflects the company's entrenched position in the cultural zeitgeist. The artists who draw from Disney's portfolio contribute to a continuously evolving conversation, ensuring that Disney's magic remains not just within the confines of theme parks and screens but alive and vibrant on the walls of cities around the world.
