The modern American holiday of Mother's Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother at St Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia. Anna Jarvis's mother, Ann Jarvis, had been a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War, and created Mother's Day Work Clubs to address public health issues. Anna Jarvis wanted to honor her mother by continuing the work she started and to set aside a day to honor all mothers because she believed that they were "the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world". In 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother's Day, held on the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor mothers. Since then, Mother's Day has become a day that children celebrate their mothers with cards, gifts, and activities. The holiday has been adopted by other countries and it's celebrated in different ways worldwide. For example, in the United Kingdom, it is traditionally known as Mothering Sunday and it's celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent. In Mexico, it's always celebrated on May 10th, regardless of the day of the week. It's important to note that Mother's Day can bring different feelings for different people. While it's a joyous occasion for many, it can be a difficult day for those who have lost their mothers or who have strained relationships with them.
