  • Ian Curtis Heart and Soul Silkscreen Print by Shepard Fairey- OBEY

Shepard Fairey- OBEY Ian Curtis Heart and Soul Silkscreen Print by Shepard Fairey- OBEY

Ian Curtis Heart and Soul Silkscreen Print by Shepard Fairey- OBEY Hand-Pulled 3-Color on Cream Speckletone Fine Art Paper Limited Edition Artwork Obey Pop Culture Artist. 2023 Signed & Numbered Limited Edition of 500 Artwork Size 18x24 Silkscreen Print "I first discovered Joy Division through my friend Jay Haley in 1985-86. Jay was a little more open-minded than I was, so he was listening to aggressive punk and hardcore, but also, more moody music like The Smiths, The Cure, early Cult, and Joy Division. I initially liked some of Joy Division’s melodies, but I generally found the music a bit cold, sparse, and haunting on the verge of depressing. However, the music grew on me over time and the qualities I just described as liabilities became assets. As I grew out of my punk rock orthodoxy phase I realized no band sounded quite like Joy Division. My love of Joy Division has only grown over the years along with my appreciation for their imagery. Joy Division’s image of elegant austerity is often connected to their artwork by Peter Saville, but a lot of credit should go to Kevin Cumminsfor his noir portraits of the band. I’ve loved Cummin’s photography for years, so I was delighted when he agreed to collaborate on a portrait of Ian Curtis, Joy Division’s singer who took his own life in 1980 at 23. Curtis was a unique singer but also a powerful lyricist, so the lyrics to the song Heart and Soul are woven through the art along with an angular divide through Curtis’s figure symbolizing the tension between heart and soul. Since Kevin actually knew Ian, I appreciated that he would allow me to interpret his iconic photo!" -Shepard Fairey- OBEY Shepard Fairey's "Ian Curtis Heart and Soul" silkscreen print is a powerful tribute to the enigmatic Joy Division frontman and his profound impact on music and visual culture. Released in 2023, this limited edition print encapsulates Fairey's deep personal connection to Curtis and the band's enduring legacy. The artwork, sized at 18x24 inches and limited to a series of 500, is meticulously hand-pulled, showcasing three colors on cream speckletone fine art paper, underscoring the raw and textured essence of the subject matter. Fairey's engagement with Joy Division's work began in the mid-1980s, a time marked by a musical awakening as he transitioned from a strict punk perspective to a broader appreciation of the haunting, sad sounds that defined Joy Division's discography. Fairey candidly discusses how the initial perception of the music as 'cold and haunting' eventually morphed into an understanding of its depth and uniqueness, revealing a narrative of personal and artistic growth. Integral to this print is Fairey's collaboration with Kevin Cummins, a photographer renowned for his poignant portraits of Joy Division, which have significantly shaped the band's visual narrative. The decision to weave the lyrics of "Heart and Soul" into the fabric of the portrait is both a literal and figurative intertwining of Curtis's lyrical genius with his visual representation. This design choice also hints at the complexities of Curtis's personal struggles, echoed in the stark contrast that bisects his figure in the artwork—a poignant reminder of the internal discord between passion and reason, emotion and intellect. Fairey's print is not merely a visual piece but a narrative collage that pays homage to the artistic influence and legacy of Ian Curtis. By embedding the soul-stirring lyrics of "Heart and Soul" within the artwork, Fairey invites viewers to engage with the piece on multiple levels: aesthetically, emotionally, and intellectually. The print transcends mere representation, becoming a conduit for the artist's reverence for Curtis's talents as a singer and lyricist and the enduring impact of Joy Division on music and popular culture, ensuring that the heart and soul of Ian Curtis's artistry continue to resonate through time.

TP Test Print 2023 Signed & Tagged Hand Painted Silkscreen Test Print Acrylic HPM Embellished One-of-a-Kind Artwork Size 20x26 Exploring the Layers of 'Interdimensional Test Print' by Dalek - James Marshall James Marshall, known in the art world as Dalek presents 'Interdimensional Test Print,' a unique hand-painted acrylic silkscreen print that captures the vibrant essence of pop street art. The 2023 artwork, sized at 20x26 inches, is not just a visual spectacle but also an embodiment of the experimental nature inherent in creating screen prints as a TP (test print); it bears the marks of an artist at work, the trial stage where colors and compositions are explored before the final edition is run. This test print is tagged and signed by Dalek, bearing the hallmarks of his distinctive style - bold colors, geometric shapes, and a unique sense of depth. The term 'HPM' denotes 'Hand Painted Multiple,' indicating that while the print may be part of a series, each piece is uniquely embellished by the artist, making it one-of-a-kind. The combination of silkscreen printing and hand painting blurs the lines between mass-produced art and unique creations, a hallmark of street pop art and graffiti artwork that often plays with such dichotomies. Dalek's Artistic Process and the Significance of Test Prints Dalek's 'Interdimensional Test Print' provides insight into the artist's process. The test print serves as a creative playground for the artist, a space to experiment with color overlays, composition adjustments, and new techniques. This stage is crucial as it allows the artist to see how different colors interact on the chosen paper, how the overlays create new hues, and how the various elements of the design come together. It's a behind-the-scenes look at the meticulous process involved in screen printing, where each layer must be carefully considered and executed. Using acrylic paint to embellish the print adds a textured, handcrafted dimension to the work, distinguishing it from the more uniform, mechanical process of screen printing. This interplay of precision and spontaneity often characterizes street pop art and graffiti artwork, where the raw, immediate energy of street art meets the calculated design of pop art. 'Interdimensional Test Print' in the Context of Street Pop Art and Graffiti In the broader context of street pop art and graffiti, Dalek's 'Interdimensional Test Print' stands out for its vivid exploration of form and color. Street pop art often takes cues from the bustling urban environment and its cacophony of signs, symbols, and colors. In this piece, Dalek synthesizes these elements into a cohesive whole that is both chaotic and controlled, a reflection of the complex urban landscapes from which street art emerges. The print showcases Dalek's evolution from his earlier graffiti-based work towards a style that incorporates street art and fine art elements. His work has always been characterized by an engagement with the visual lexicon of graffiti—its bold lines, vivid colors, and recurring motifs. Yet, in 'Interdimensional Test Print,' there is a noticeable shift towards a more abstract and complex composition that suggests a deeper engagement with the formal qualities of art-making. This piece not only represents Dalek's artistic journey but also the journey of street pop art itself. The genre has moved from the fringes of the art world to occupy a more central position, where it is recognized for its innovation, technical skill, and capacity to communicate complex themes. 'Interdimensional Test Print,' with its hand-painted layers and meticulous silkscreen technique, is emblematic of this shift, encapsulating the essence of street pop art as a continually evolving form and defying easy categorization. Collectors and admirers of Dalek's work recognize the intrinsic value of a piece like 'Interdimensional Test Print.' As a one-of-a-kind artwork, it holds aesthetic appeal and an intimate connection to the artist's hand and creative spirit. It embodies the dynamism of street pop art and graffiti artwork, a field that continues to push boundaries and challenge our perceptions of art and creativity.

This hand-pulled 3-color silkscreen print on fine art paper is part of a limited edition series, with only 100 pieces in existence, each one signed and numbered by the artist himself. Created in 2023, the 18x24 artwork encapsulates myriad iconographic elements that Mike Giant is renowned for: tattoo examples, an Egyptian figure, a human brain, a female portrait, and a sports car, all executed with a striking green and blue color palette. Mike Giant's Artistic Lexicon in 'Invader' Mike Giant's artistic lexicon is a confluence of various influences, from tattoo art's graphic sharpness to Egyptian iconography's symbolic depth. The 'Invader' print serves as a canvas for these diverse elements to form a cohesive narrative. The juxtaposition of a modern sports car with the ancient Egyptian figure speaks to the timelessness of human fascination with progress and power. Meanwhile, including a detailed human brain and the haunting image of a skull evoke a contemplation of human consciousness and mortality. The female portrait, rendered in a classic pop art style, along with the stylized text and motifs, is reminiscent of vintage advertisements and propaganda art. These elements collectively critique consumerism, fame, and the commodification of human values and identity. It reflects street pop art's potential to communicate complex messages within visually arresting imagery. Craftsmanship in Silkscreen Printing The 'Invader Green Blue Silkscreen Print' craftsmanship reflects Mike Giant's dedication to traditional art-making techniques. Silkscreen printing, a method with roots in early 20th-century industrial and graphic arts, has been embraced by artists within pop art and street art for its ability to produce vibrant, crisp images that capture the dynamism of urban life. In this print, the hand-pulled technique ensures that each piece is unique, imbued with the artist's touch and the subtle variations from manual printing. Symbolism and Narrative in Modern Street Art Symbolism plays a crucial role in the narrative power of the 'Invader' print. Each iconographic element is carefully chosen to represent facets of modern society and the human experience. The skull and skeleton, often associated with danger or mortality, are juxtaposed with symbols of wealth and the pursuit of pleasure, such as money and fast cars. This interplay of symbols provokes a dialogue about the dichotomies present in contemporary life—between life and death, spirituality and materialism, history and progress. The 'Invader Green Blue Silkscreen Print' by Mike Giant, as a piece of street pop art and graffiti artwork, is a testament to the enduring influence of these art forms in contemporary culture. It encapsulates the essence of street art's ability to infiltrate public consciousness with universal and deeply personal messages. For collectors and admirers, the 'Invader' print is not just a visual spectacle; it is an emblem of the power of art to reflect and critique the world we navigate daily.

  • Let There Be Dark Red Print by Shepard Fairey- OBEY x Niagara

Shepard Fairey- OBEY Let There Be Dark Red Print by Shepard Fairey- OBEY x Niagara

Let There Be Dark Red Silkscreen Print by Shepard Fairey- OBEY x Niagara Hand-Pulled 3-Color on 320gsm Natural Coventry Rag Vellum Fine Art Paper Limited Edition Artwork Obey Pop Culture Artist. 2019 Signed & Numbered Limited Edition of 150 Artwork Size 24x18 Silkscreen Print "I chose an image of Ron and Niagara where I think they both look amazing, but there was a nice balance between in-your-face aggression with Ron's pose making eye contact, holding his fist up, and Niagara's seemingly demure embrace of Ron, but anyone who knows Niagara understands that though she may look sedate, she's pulling the strings. I added a switchblade that she is caressing with her finger, as a way to amplify her femme fatale chic, and because I thought it lent itself to my original idea of a title 'Bonnie & Clyde Were Lightweights'" -Shepard Fairey- OBEY Exploring the Bold Realms of "Let There Be Dark" by Shepard Fairey: A Street Pop Art Icon Shepard Fairey's "Let There Be Dark Red Silkscreen Print" is a striking embodiment of the symbiotic relationship between street pop art and contemporary visual culture. This limited edition piece, created in collaboration with Niagara, is a visual narrative encapsulating the energy and subversive undercurrents that course through this artistic movement. As a hand-pulled 3-color print on 320gsm Natural Coventry Rag Vellum fine art paper, it stands as a testament to Fairey's mastery over the medium and his unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of street art into the delicate art sphere. Produced in 2019, the artwork is part of a highly exclusive series, with only 150 signed and numbered editions available. The dimensions of the artwork, 24x18 inches, are significant not only for their visual impact but also for their ability to draw the viewer into the confrontational yet poised dynamic that defines the composition. Fairey's choice of subjects, Ron and Niagara, is particularly telling; their depictions are rendered with a stark contrast of black, white, and a commanding red, highlighting their iconic stances and the charged atmosphere they embody. Fairey's narrative intention behind "Let There Be Dark" is as compelling as the visual force of the artwork. In his words, he captures the essence of Ron and Niagara's personas, juxtaposing Ron's aggressive frontality with Niagara's seemingly delicate yet cunning disposition. The addition of a switchblade subtly caressed by Niagara adds a layer of danger and a nod to the femme fatale archetype. This imagery is not merely decorative; it is a deliberate act to challenge and subvert the viewer's expectations, a hallmark of Fairey's style that has cemented his place in street pop art and graffiti artwork. The title, "Let There Be Dark," invites interpretation, playing on the biblical phrase "Let there be light," suggesting a reversal or an embrace of shadow and complexity over simplicity and illumination. This reversal is symbolic of the more significant cultural critique often found in Fairey's work, where the binaries of good and evil, light and dark, are not just questioned but also deconstructed. Beyond the visual and thematic layers, the print's collectibility is further enhanced by its fine art attributes. The use of Coventry Rag Vellum fine art paper, known for its durability and smooth texture, ensures that the colors' vibrancy and the lines' precision remain intact over time. The paper choice reflects Fairey's nuanced understanding of materials and their role in elevating street art to OK art status. Shepard Fairey's "Let There Be Dark Red Silkscreen Print" is an authentic representation of the spirit of street pop art. It bridges the gap between street art's raw expressiveness and silkscreen printing's calculated precision. With its limited edition status and the artist's signature, the print is not just a piece of art; it is a cultural artifact that captures the pulse of contemporary society and the ongoing dialogue between street art and the mainstream art world. It is a vivid example of how street pop art continues to shape and influence our visual language and cultural conversations.

WK Interact, a French artist based in New York City, is renowned for his kinetic, motion-based black-and-white street art. His works often depict figures in motion, creating a sense of velocity and dynamism that is emblematic of urban life. The artistry goes beyond traditional graffiti as his murals often interact with the architecture and environment they are placed in, reflecting a deep connection with the urban landscape. A key concept behind his work is to capture the energy and pace of city life, turning mundane structures into a living art spectacle. "I’ve known WK for almost 25 years, but I admired his art for many years before that. When I started putting art up on the streets of NY in the early 90s, WK had some of the best murals around lower Manhattan. We’ve collaborated a few times over the years, and when I was in NYC in December, WK shot some portraits of me as part of an artist homage series. Usually, I’m uncomfortable being the subject of art pieces, but I love what he did with the final art because it merges our aesthetics very harmoniously… and my face is less of the focus!" -Shepard Fairey "In 2009, I was invited by Shepard Fairey to have a solo show at the Subliminal Project Gallery in Los Angeles. 14 years later, I have the pleasure of visiting Subliminal Projects once again… to sign a new limited edition print, on which we collaborated. I met Shepard long ago… I’ve joined him on many adventures around the world, from Berlin, Japan, NYC, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, to Paris. Early on, I realized as we were hitting the streets with paste ups, that we shared something in common and that was the constant desire to work. Shepard was the first person to contact me and extend an invitation to participate in the game. I admire how sharp he is… he forgets nothing. I’m grateful that he let me paint his portrait, but I’m mostly honored to call him my friend." –WK Interact

Stencil FIne Art Graffiti Street Pop Artwork

Emergence and Influence of Silkscreen in Street Pop Art and Graffiti

Silkscreen printing is synonymous with vibrant versatility and has profoundly influenced street pop art and graffiti artwork. This method, also known as screen printing, involves pushing ink through a mesh screen onto a substrate, except in areas made impermeable to the ink by a blocking stencil. Its origins trace back to China during the Song Dynasty, but in the 20th century, silkscreen found its foothold in the art world. The technique gained prominence with the rise of the pop art movement, with artists like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein using it to create their iconic works. These artists utilized silkscreen to replicate and manipulate images from popular culture, a practice that resonated powerfully within the burgeoning street art scene. In the context of street pop art and graffiti artwork, silkscreen printing has been embraced for its ability to efficiently reproduce images, allowing artists to share their messages widely and quickly. The essence of street art and graffiti lies in their accessibility and often transient nature. Using silkscreen techniques, street artists can produce multiple copies of their work, extending their reach beyond the physical limitations of street walls and into galleries, exhibitions, and private collections. This has played a critical role in the democratization of art, making it accessible and relatable to a broader audience. Silkscreen printing allows for the layering of colors and textures, offering street artists a unique way to add depth and complexity to their work.

Techniques and Evolution in Street Art

The use of silkscreen in street pop art and graffiti has evolved over the years, with artists continually experimenting with new methods and materials. This evolution has led to a diverse range of styles and techniques within the genre. Some artists combine silkscreen with other mediums like spray paint or hand-drawn elements, combining traditional and contemporary methods. The flexibility of silkscreen printing also enables artists to play with scale, creating everything from small prints to large murals. This versatility has made it an essential tool in the street artist's repertoire, bridging the illicit thrill of graffiti and the more accepted domain of fine art. The cultural impact of silkscreen fine art prints in street pop art and graffiti is profound. These artworks often serve as social commentary, reflecting the artist's perspective on politics, societal norms, or consumer culture. The ability of silkscreen prints to be mass-produced has also played a crucial role in disseminating these messages, allowing them to reach and engage a wider audience. This art form has challenged traditional perceptions of fine art and given marginalized communities and viewpoints a voice. The recognition and commercial success of these prints have further validated street art as a legitimate and vital artistic expression.

Future Trajectories in Artistic Expression

Looking ahead, the future of silkscreen in street pop art and graffiti artwork appears vibrant and dynamic. The intersection of digital technology with traditional silkscreen techniques opens new frontiers for artistic expression. Artists are now exploring digital silkscreen printing, combining the precision of digital design with the tactile quality of screen printing. This hybrid approach expands street artists' creative possibilities, allowing them to experiment with more complex and detailed imagery. As the boundaries between street art, pop art, and fine art continue to blur, silkscreen printing remains a vital tool, enabling artists to push the limits of creativity and expression. Silkscreen fine art prints have significantly impacted the development and evolution of street pop art and graffiti. This medium has provided artists with a powerful means to reproduce and disseminate their work, bridging the gap between street art's ephemeral nature and fine art's enduring quality. As the art world continues to evolve, the role of silkscreen in street art and graffiti will undoubtedly remain pivotal, driving innovation and artistic exploration in the years to come.
