William Schaff is an American artist and illustrator known for his intricate and haunting artwork. He was born in 1970 in Warren, Rhode Island, and grew up in nearby Bristol. Schaff attended the Rhode Island School of Design in the late 1980s, where he studied illustration. Schaff's artwork often features fantastical creatures and landscapes, rendered in a highly detailed and intricate style. He frequently works in pen and ink, using crosshatching and stippling techniques to create texture and depth. Schaff's art has been described as dark and unsettling, often incorporating themes of death, loss, and isolation. Schaff has created artwork for a wide variety of clients, including musicians, authors, and publishers. He is perhaps best known for his work with the band Godspeed You! Black Emperor, for whom he has created numerous album covers and posters. Schaff has also illustrated books, including the novel "House of Leaves" by Mark Z. Danielewski. In addition to his illustration work, Schaff is also a musician and songwriter. He has released several albums under the name "The Yellow Dress" and has performed with a number of other bands. Schaff currently lives and works in Warren, Rhode Island, where he runs his own gallery and studio.
