I spent a little extra time with this series. I added little spider and web details hidden in each piece. Also I'm including some extra gifts created for this series within the packaging. These are not prints but individual paintings. This was created by dipping the edges of the paper in water then quickly scrawling on it with waterbased spraypaint using a fat cap. Then, quickly blast it with a hose while it is still wet to reveal the spraypaints ghost like textures and whips. These ghost shapes become the pathways to then detail out with black charcoal pencil. Because of the fast chaotic nature of the first stage of this process using the spraypaint each piece becomes unique yet simular. The detailing process of the second stage using the black charcoal pencil is slower paced and requires more attention. This drawing process becomes cathartic and meditative as each little puzzle is completed. -Also, as I was working on this series, my son was inspired to draw this baby blackwidow drawing. The surprise song though is “Moon Over Marin”… detractors have called it the Dead Kennedy’s “U2” song, but I disagree. “Moon Over Marin” is more melodic than most DK, but juxtaposed with the darkness of the lyrics, the song evokes a powerful sense of existential melancholy. I think the concept that struck me, and stuck with me, is that our disrespect of each other and the planet may doom us, but things will continue without us. I think it is healthy to recognize impermanence, but also to appreciate the value of the ephemeral. Moonlight, real or electric, will probably be around, but what it will be casting light on is the real question. There will always be a moon over Biloxi." -Shepard

I ended up gravitating towards John's image because it had that nod to psychedelia, without going so overboard in the baroque detail, that it remained iconic. This Hendrix image itself — along with a few other influences, like Barbara Kruger and Russian Constructivism — was a huge influence in how I was going to make work that had the ability to cut through the clutter of what's on the street and still have a recognizable style. When I was just making variations of the Andre on the different backgrounds, I was looking at a lot of psychedelic work, but John's piece really inspired me to make something that was a deviation from just playing it safe with the original Andre image.
