  • OxyCookie Blotter Paper Archival Print by Ben Frost

Ben Frost OxyCookie Blotter Paper Archival Print by Ben Frost

OxyCookie Blotter Paper Limited Edition Archival Pigment Print Art on Perforated Blotter Paper by Ben Frost pop culture LSD artwork. Australian contemporary artist Ben Frost is best known for his bold, irreverent Pop Art. His instantly recognizable take on pop culture twists up everyday iconography from the world’s biggest brands. Subverting meaning and messages from the mainstream media, Frost’s scything commentary on advertising, entertainment, and politics is both confronting and controversial. Ben Frost is utilizing imagery familiar to western culture in order to make a statement about the culture itself on the basis of consumerism, modern icons, big corporations, etc. Animation characters, pop icons, brand logos, and many more are transformed into vibrant artworks and find their place in galleries. With this in mind, and in the case of Ben Frost, it is futile to try to identify a clear borderline between low and high art. In reality, the artist wants the audience to think on the terms of high or low value and, by extension, what these actually mean. Over the years street artists have managed to establish themselves as respected creators and some of them have even gained international fame, transforming graffiti from a fringe art, aiming sometimes to mark street gangs’ territory, into big business.

Nathan Spoor Truth Automaton Archival Print by Nathan Spoor

Truth Automaton Limited Edition Archival Pigment Prints on 310gsm Fine Art Paper by Nathan Spoor Graffiti Street Artist Modern Pop Art. "This piece exists as a fun exercise of me being influenced by the ideas, words, and pictures from some pretty radical creative thinkers. Most of the characters in the piece are manifestations of Ralph Steadman’s reactions to Hunter S. Thompson’s wild Gonzo persona and my imaginings of how they would all huddle together around a core value in Hunter’s work – the eternal search for truth. When I created this piece I was inspired by the double-feature articles I was writing for Juxtapoz last year, a cover feature on Steadman, and a piece on Hunter. I researched for about three months, reading everything I could find, looking at all the images, articles, documentaries, and interviews I could find. I collected editions of both guys’ books as part of the research, trying to find first printings or hard to find books of Steadman’s art so I could hold something with that original energy – it might sound silly but I’m old fashioned in some ways. So while I was doing the research and reading, I was also coming up with ideas and did a decent-sized piece about the collaborative madness that Steadman and Hunter shared." - Nathan Spoor

Currently exhibits locally and internationally, while his work has been presented in multiple exhibitions in the USA, Europe, and Asia. It is not random that a great portion of his art consists of appropriated imagery of animations, just like the Simpsons, Looney Tunes, Smurfs, Winnie the Pooh, etc., which are placed into a new artistic context, without losing their original connotations.

Her work is not just seen; it is felt. In 'You Complete Me,' the symbiosis between the woman and the mountains suggests a narrative of unity and wholeness. 'You Complete Me' challenges the viewer to see beyond the concrete walls and to find the correlation between the organic and the artificial. Winnel's work is a testament to Street Pop Art's versatility and ever-evolving nature, demonstrating that it is not confined to cityscapes and can indeed encompass a broader range of themes and subjects. It is a shining example of how Street Pop Art can transcend its urban roots and explore more profound, universal themes. The piece is not only a reflection of Winnel's talent but also a reflection of the dynamic and changing landscape of contemporary art. While contributing to the piece's visual impact, this technique has also resulted in some paint flaking over time—a common characteristic of Keil's works from this period. The painting carries a sense of history and authenticity despite this, or perhaps because of it. It speaks not only to the longevity of Keil's art but also to the organic nature of street pop art, a genre that often embraces the beauty of imperfection and the passage of time. The Cultural Significance of Keil's Portrait of Warhol The cultural significance of Keil's portrait of Warhol cannot be overstated. By depicting Warhol, Keil aligns himself with a tradition of art deeply embedded in exploring celebrity culture, mass media, and consumerism. Warhol, a leading figure in the pop art movement, is an apt subject for Keil's expressive style, which is often characterized by a disregard for conventional beauty and a celebration of individualistic expression. The portrait is not just a likeness of Warhol but a dialogue with his legacy, rendered in the bold colors and sweeping lines that have become synonymous with Keil's oeuvre. Furthermore, the choice of Masonite as a substrate is particularly resonant within the context of Street Pop Art and Graffiti Artwork. As a material, Masonite bridges the gap between the traditional canvas and the urban landscape, bringing a sense of the street into the gallery. Sturdy and unpretentious qualities mirror the ethos of street art's accessibility and pop art's challenge to highbrow aesthetics. This artwork is a piece of cultural history, encapsulating the spirit of its time and the ongoing conversation between street culture and the art establishment. Legacy and Lasting Impact of Keil's Artistic Approach The legacy and lasting impact of Keil's artistic approach is evident in works like the "Warhol '82 Large Face." His method of employing thick layers of oil paint gives the artwork its distinctive texture and depth and connects it to the broader history of painting. Keil's work, much like graffiti, possesses an immediacy and an intensity that is amplified by the physicality of the paint itself. This physicality—combined with the cultural weight of his subjects—creates a compelling fusion that has influenced both street art and pop art. Keil's portrayals go beyond mere representation; they embody his subjects' spirits, capturing their essence through his frenetic brushstrokes and audacious use of color. The "Warhol '82 Large Face" is a perfect example of how Keil's work resonates with the vibrancy and the raw, emotional undercurrents of the urban experience. It is pieces like this that secure Peter Keil's place in the pantheon of artists who have successfully merged the worlds of street pop art and traditional painting, creating a visual language that is at once familiar and revolutionary. "Warhol '82 Large Face" by Peter Keil is a significant piece of art history and a vibrant narrative in the visual story of Street Pop Art and Graffiti Artwork. Its significance lies in its ability to communicate across time, bearing the marks of its creation and the vision of its creator. As a historical document, it offers insight into the aesthetic and thematic concerns of the early 1980s art scene. As a work of art, it stands as a powerful expression of identity, culture, and the enduring nature of visual communication.

Face & Head
Pop art, street art, and graffiti art are dynamic genres that have left a notable impact on contemporary visual culture, with the face and head often emerging as central themes. This motif, universally recognized and instantly engaging, has been utilized by artists for its potent ability to convey a myriad of emotions, messages, and identities. The bold, provocative world of pop art first began to champion the face and head in the mid-20th century. Icons such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein used this motif to challenge cultural norms, presenting familiar faces - often celebrities - in unexpected ways. Warhol's multicolored depictions of Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, and other celebrities, for instance, elevated these figures to the status of mass-produced commodities, critiquing the consumerist culture of the time. Lichtenstein, on the other hand, drew from comic books, using the exaggerated expressions of his characters to comment on society's emotional sterility. Street art and graffiti, which originated from the urban underground, have also widely employed the face and head motif. These art forms often serve as a platform for social and political commentary, and the face's universality makes it a powerful tool for artists to communicate with their audience. Banksy, an anonymous England-based street artist, often uses stenciled images of faces and heads to articulate messages of peace, rebellion, or social justice. On walls, buildings, and streets, these faces become a form of visual language that transcends boundaries, resonating with diverse audiences. In the realm of graffiti art, the face and head motif often emerges in the form of tags, throw-ups, and pieces. Notably, the stylized signatures or 'tags' of graffiti artists frequently incorporate face-like elements, signifying the artist's identity in a cryptic yet visually compelling manner. Artists such as SEEN and Dondi White have showcased their unique vision through the depiction of faces and heads, highlighting their individuality amidst the vast graffiti landscape. From the stylized and glamorous portraits of pop art to the raw and rebellious depictions in street and graffiti art, the face and head motif has remained a constant. It serves as a conduit for human emotion and identity, speaking volumes about the society in which it is embedded. Through the different lenses of pop, street, and graffiti art, the face and head motif continues to challenge, provoke, and captivate, making it a cornerstone of these vibrant art movements.
